Comparison Essay

Everyone has or will have experienced the pain of being forced to move on for you own well-being. Both “The Giver” and “Praying” address these experiences to show how important it is to find peace within yourself and move on. In “The Giver,” Jonas experiences quite a few unsettling things. Similarly, in “Praying,” the speaker has also experienced many unsettling problems in the past years. In both texts, we learn that moving on can lead to incredible strength in the future.

A common theme in both texts is that sometimes you can find strength in the worst times. In “The Giver,” Jonas stays in the community for quite some time. He hid his pain from his family and this caused him to distance himself from them. He experiences pain that none of the other people in the community will ever feel. He finds enough strength to take baby Gabe and leave the community forever. The speaker in “The Giver,” states “I had to learn how to fight for myself…” to show that the relationship she was part of previously caused her great pain. She states further, “No more monsters I can breathe again.” This shows that even though she went through great amounts of pain, she came out on top and full of strength. In both texts, the characters experience pain and have found strength

Even though both text deal with finding strength in rough times, there are differences between how the theme appears in the text. In “The Giver,” Jonas is dealing with pain caused by memories that are not his, but are given to him and the secrets that were hidden from him begin to pain him as he finds out about them. Jonas’ pain causes him to be angry and leave the community. In “Praying,” Kesha explains that she left an abusive relationship and found inner peace by forgiving. The text states, “And I don’t need you, I’ve found the strength I’ve never known.” Kesha found strength during an incredibly horrible situation.

In both “Praying” and “The Giver,” the speaker state the importance of dealing with the pain you experience. After reading “The Giver” and listening to “Praying,” some might say that it is up to each person to decide how they deal with painful situations. You can forgive or you can be angry.

Literary Essay on “The Giver”

Lois Lowry’s story, “The Giver,” takes place in a fairly small community, many secrets are hidden, good and bad secrets. Jonas is one of the only people other than the Giver and the Chief of Elders that know of these secrets and memories. One lesson the story suggests is that challenging circumstances can enrich your life and make it better.

From the very beginning the author hints that Jonas is different from everyone else. Almost as if he doesn’t fit in the community. He is more mature than most of the elevens in his community. The author throws challenges at Jonas, such as becoming the Receiver, gaining memories and beginning to see colors. Jonas begins seeing color and soon realizes that not everyone can see the colors. He describes the color red as “crimson, wetness of the apple.”  He is confused as to why no one else can see them other than The Giver and himself. So, he asks The Giver. The Giver tells him that color allows the people of the community to be different and the Chief of Elders wants everyone to be as uniform as possible.

Jonas’ father brings home a newborn from his job as a nurture. His name is Gabe and the children can’t get attached to the baby boy. But, Jonas notices a birthmark on the baby and he becomes interested. He becomes attached quickly. Jonas also begins gaining bad memories along with good one. The pain of receiving memories is sometimes unbearable. This creates new painful situations for Jonas. Jonas also stops taking his medicine which makes the stirrings start again, it also allows him to start seeing color. The author keeps throwing challenges at Jonas. These challenges make Jonas want to leave the community.

Jonas’ father releases a baby boy and Jonas is shown a video of the release. Releasing is one of the many secrets of the community, but the Receiver and the Giver have access to all of the secrets. When Jonas returns home after his long day and his father says that Gabe must be released because he isn’t sleeping through the nights yet. Jonas gets scared and takes Gabe out of the community on his father’s bike. The ride to a new community is challenging. While Jonas is riding he falls into the snow and the author explains his pain as “it was as if a hatchet lay lodged in his leg,” Jonas was obviously in great amounts of pain and it was very challenging. Eventually, they reach the new community.

Some might say that challenging circumstances do not enrich your life but make it worse. While this is a good point, Jonas is not like everyone else. His challenging circumstances enriched his life and made him reach for a better life for him and baby Gabe.

Introduction to The Giver

The Giver takes place in the future, in almost December. Most of the beginning of the book takes place in Jonas’ house an at a place similar to a nursing home where he volunteers. A few parts are at the Auditorium.

Jonas is the main character in The Giver. He struggles with finding out what job he’ll have and with the anxious feeling from waiting for the Ceremony of the 12’s. His father and mother influence him a lot. His father tells stories of when he was young so that Jonas understands that what he is feeling is not wrong. Jonas seems to be a complex character and I can’t wait to get to know him more.

Bullying: What can you do?

What is bullying?

Bullying:”unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.”

Micheal walked down the halls, hoping today would be different. Maybe the bully was having a better day, maybe he was going to enjoy his lunch today, maybe his mother and father were getting along better. So Micheal kept his head down. A number one rule to avoid bullies. “don’t make eye contact”, “keep your head down and they won’t notice you”, “maybe if you were normal, people wouldn’t pick on you”. Micheal kept his eyes pointed towards the ground and his head low, attempting to avoid the bully at all costs.

Children and teens all around America deal with bullying every single day. Physical, emotional, and cyber. And some school are taking little to no precautions. And according to a few parents that is not okay.

Bullying has always been an issue, since children began school but according to statistics, the bully rates are only going up. 28% of 6-12 graders are bullied. “83% of girls and 79% of boys report experiencing harassment”  Approximately 30% of students admit to being a bully or doing some type of “bullying”. Most bullying occurs in Middle Schools.

Nearly 1/3 of teens are bullied or are bullies. And it’s worse in younger teens.

Students who experience bullying are at a risk for poor school adjustment, sleep difficulty, anxiety and depression.

Among high school students 15.5% are cyber bullied and 20.2% are bullied on school property.

If children are being bullied on school property, shouldn’t more precautions, rules and consequences be put in place?

Nearly 70% of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying.

Most bullying occurs in less supervised areas in the school, such as the cafeteria and hallways. Schools must hire more staff or even place cameras throughout the building to keep watch. Teachers can’t constantly watch the children but they can pay close enough attention to catch more of these problems.

Bullying prevention is a very controversial topic. What can be done? There are many things that can be done. But without people becoming more educated, they will not know. Knowledge is power. If people become more educated on the topic of bullying and bullying prevention, more action will occur to help prevent bullying.

Teachers and Administrators can help students by just being there; talking students through their problems, being open to help. The NEA states that, Teachers and Administrators must “make an effort to move to the areas where students are during transition times”.

“Bullying is a solvable problem” the National Education Association states.

There is proven evidence that suspending the bully achieves nothing. The bully should be given a step by step program for at-risk students.

Bullying can be prevented. YOU have to take the steps to prevent bullying

(Mrs. Froning or Mrs. Foster will be interviewed. – not finished.)

Fwcs does the best they can. But is it enough? Bullying isn’t going to just disappear but we could attempt to slow it down or lower statistics.

Teenagers take their lives over bullying, and most of us are just sitting back watching.

Uniforms?

In Mr. Hoering’s 8th grade, language arts, second period class, Mrs. Oaks, the new instructional coach at Blackhawk Middle School, announced that on September 5th, 2017, the students of Blackhawk Middle School would be wearing uniforms. The uniforms would involve wearing khaki pants and navy blue or white polos.

Many of the students were outraged. A few even cried. There were many different opinions. A majority were negative. But a few positive. The students asked many questions. “will we have free days?”  “what about dress down fridays?”  “what about pink out days?”  “can we wear whatever shoes we want?”

School officially started August 15th. So why wasn’t this announced before school started? A great question, asked a many. The answer is… it was all just a prank. The school got the students good. Many students broke the no cell phones rule to text their guardians. The office was getting calls left and right. The students were told not to tell other classes so that the prank could continue.

I am a reader!

The last book I read was “Holding up the Universe”. I didn’t know it at the time, but it’s my favorite book ever. I love the main character. She is amazing. She’s so strong and wonderful. Libby Stout is my favorite protagonists. “Holding up the Universe” is in my opinion one of best books ever.

I chose “Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here”. I chose this book because the cover and the spine looked really cool. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books about romance, awkward girls and rpobots.
